I have a N & W lettered tender on a Class A Blueline loco and want to re-letter it to Canadian National. Is there a safe way to remove the N & W lettering? Would alcohol work? Don't want to try anything before getting some advice.
AAAAHHHHH Don't ruin it!!!!!!!

Many years ago I saw an article in Mainline Modeler Mag. where the guy removed the factory paint from an Athearn SD-40 shell with a pencil eraser. I tried it on an N&W unit (sorry scorpion) to make a Southern Rwy. with favorable results. It took several erasers but it worked.
I have to side with Scorpion, being an N&W Class A fan.

Hope this helps,

I haven't been able to find anything that will remove the BLI lettering and paint without dissolving the plastic.
Even Scalecoat wash-away? Its supposed to be plastic safe...I dunked a BLI E-7 after a painting snafu with no problems. That being said, I also dunked a 50.00 resin kit caboose and ruined the frame! And resin is supposed to be better than plastic in the area of being chemically resistant.
I would get my finger damp with the stuff and dab it on the inside of the tender shell to test it. If it gets gooey stop immediately and rinse it off with water.
If it doesn't, pour the Wash-away in a pyrex dish, dunk the model shell turning it to get it completely covered. Turn on the kitchen faucet and scrub with a medium bristle tooth brush. Repeat dunking and rinse/scrub till the paint is gone.
Bernie, I recall that I DID use the eraser method on one of my BLI Class As...I removed the 8 on 1218 on the cab and replaced it with a 3 decal. I dabbed a little black paint on the 8 on the number plate and applied a decal over it. Shot a gloss coat over it and then a very light dull coat and it looks as good as factory.
Are you going to winterize the cab and all the other common practices for frigid operation?
