I would still try dialing it down to 12v, if you can, (you could try installing a buck if you can't) last thing you need is burnt out wiring, someone else might have a suggestion as to why your resistors are getting hot, but that's the only reason I can think of.

Yes, a pententiometer is just a variable resistor, but you'll need to use a multimeter to know when your at 12v or lower.

You can't use a potentiometer directly unless you want to see it burning. You need some electronics along with the potentiometer to make it working safely. Just my two cents...

After doing a bit more research, Christian's correct, a buck or step-down will definately work as I use two on my layout, their about a $1 each.

Using a Buck is simpler and cheaper though.

You might want to look at these too, no need for a multimeter has LED voltage readout.

I've worked out that a complete circuit of your layout is about 2.40 seconds, and you call that small !!!!!, hate to think what you consider a large layout to be.

But joking aside, great layout, thoroughly enjoyed the trip round it, thank you for sharing.

And thank you and Christian for the input on the voltage reduction circuit. I got it in the mail today . Simple to install. The resistors no longer get hot. I built this about 30 years ago. Can’t believe I still had it. I adjusted the voltage down to 12v. It was putting out 22.5!!!! All is well now.

22.5v!!!!!!, flipping 'eck, your lucky you didn't blow everything with that kind of voltage.

Here is a quick yard to main and back. This time I ran my Rapido Amtrak F40. Beautiful looking model! Once I get my branch line scenery done I’ll have some more videos to show. But for now this is all I have. Enjoy.

Here are the last two videos until I get more scenery done, which won’t be for a while. Tomorrow it’s back to work. Vacation is over.

The one video was more of a fun video. Have you ever wanted to pace another train from the adjacent track? I have always wanted to see that perspective, so I did it. The second video is the branch line again. But this time it goes from the coal yard to the Conrail interchange. Enjoy!
