Hello, I'm new to the forum and want to say hello from Iowa! :D Very soon I am going to start work on my layout. It is a 16x4 layout. Its going to be based on the Model Railroader Salt Lake Route plan. I will be running mixed freight cars and mostly NS motive power. Any tips and or suggestions, let them be heard! Thanks again

Hi latemodelstampe,

NS power and mixed frieght! It already sounds good:D

Why don't you draw up a plan and some of the good people here can help you with practical advice. I would be interested to hear what sort of operation you have planned. This will help you sort out what you need to include in the design.

Some ideas to think about are: what industries, what sort of trains and how many trains.

Maybe grab a copy of 'Track design for Realistic Operations' by John Armstrong. This book is really good and helps you avoid beginner pit falls:

Here's a link to yard design which is worth considering:

Let us know how you progress and please ask more questions.
