Keep On Truck'n!


The truck I have I need to take some closeup pics. Some stuff is custom modified. The Herp tractors have upgraded wheels and I hand paint in the marker lights and tail lights with a toothpick.The blue one is custom painted CSX blue, black one has the bull bar added. The dump trailer is a Herpa. Painted the silver part of the lift cylinder(can't see) and added a tag axle. Two trailers are up 2 down.

I guess this would be 50/50 a longrunner. A 53' trailer that spans 2 85' railcars. I built these but had trouble getting the trailers to stay on going into curvers. I seen where one guy expanded the car so there was room for the trailer tires to move on the car in the curves but never really set right coming out of the turn or switch. An idea came to me that if the tandems could rotate slightly the trailer would always stay straight on the car. So after trying different things I came up with the Bowser trailer with a bolt and a washer on the bottom which allowed it to rotate. Added some weight to the trailer and it works just fine.

I still have an idea for a self steering/delayed steering trailer axle group. Specifically for a 45-53' trailer like the one above.. After I sold my business,, in 08, I no longer have the facilities nor the ambition to build the prototype.
Being a truck driver for many years i don't think this would be a good idea for most tractor trailers. BTW this idea is not new at all, trailers in Europe which are used to haul long logs out of the forests, have that feature for years. That's in order to navigate sharp turns in the forests. But out on the road the trailer tandems get locked up to prevent steering.

Ladder fire trucks actually have trailer steering but of course they’re not highway speed.

Yes they do, and it's cool to see a skilled rear driver navigating city streets in New York for example. But out driving a normal tractor trailer i wouldn't want my tandems to deviate in anyway, it's sometimes bad enough when trailer is "dog legging" because another driver hit something and messed up the allingenent. Getting in some places in New Jersey where they squeeze four lanes where there should be only two with a wide turn lane, drivers just hug those white lanes on pavement and any dog legging of the trailer is scary sometimes.
 
I don’t remember the brand of truck but I found it at Wallyworld and added Herpa mirrors.
The trailer is by Herpa and I was planning on adding fiber optic lighting as these trailers usually have a lot of lights.
That’s “Matt” reaching for his smokes, I think everyone has a Matt on the layout close to a truck!

I have a small intermodal terminal on my road, so I need tractors, containers, container trailers, and road trailers. Lots of them. Here’s a pic of all my tractors and a sample of the others. To buy tractors, I looked for ones that were close to scale and had some detail. I’ll be more selective about them at later phases of build out, in a year or two.
