I am redoing my track layout using Kato Unitrtack and would like to know if there is a stronger preference to use # 4 or #6 turnouts and why one may be preferred over the other.

typically #4 s on yards and industrial, #6 on staging yards , passing sidings , basically you dont want to be dragging a 40 car train through a #4. You also dont really want to be dragging 60' + length cars thru #4s if you can avoid it .

That pretty much goes in any scale on standard gauge track.

In fact if I were using cars over 60' I would be trying to use #8 s or better. Cars dont like to be dragged side ways , they tend to derail .
