Thanks. I'm happier with the model now, now that the weathering has hid some of its flaws. Yes, brass comes with flaws unfortunately.
I usually wash my ballast after it dries with awash of brown colour with a large brush then dust it with chalk dust and seal it with dullcote, but since this area represents a track recently ballasted, I skipped the wash and dusted it instead since it is near a ballast quarry.
Very nice work, on both the model and your scenicking skills. What are you using for the taller green grass in the first image? It looks very convincing.

The taller grass is cut up HEKI grass matts. They tend to be a bit shinny so I dullcote it.
I make the trees from local sagebrush branches and NOCH trees. The leaves are NOCH also.
I try to avoid buying brass when it comes to diesels, but no one made this CNR prototypically in plastic to my liking. Though I still think the plastic models are much nicer in regards to railing posts and other details such as lettering and numbering.
Thanks for the info. These long grass matts are something new since I was away from the hobby, but I can see the practicality of them. I used to hand plant clumps of cut and dyed rope to fill an area like that.... that was a lot of work. I might have to try a matt or two someday, I really like the look you accomplished.

Thanks and thanks for identifying the FA1; I forgot what it was; couldn't remember is it was a FA2 or FA1. I don't even know how prototypical it is.
The taller grass is nice stuff, but remember to use plenty of glue when applying it. The grass fibres can easily be vacuumed up. Also they tend to be shinny; I dullcote them.
FA-1's have the rad shutters in the rear while the FA-2's have them slightly forward. The Proto2000 FA-1's are pretty accuarate, I have one. The Proto2000 FA-2's were pervious generation and also nicely detailed but the grabs are a bit large and the belt drive fan was more gimick than prototypical.
