In my area, southern calif., I see BNSF, mostly BSNF, but also SP, and UP, diesels in one consist. Apparently all loco's are shared, do they lease these between one another or does one actually own all of them? Just curious, don't know how that works. Thanks.
Paul
SP is actually part of the UP now so you are just seeing engines that haven't been repainted yet. There will usually be a "patch" job on the can showing UP and the new number.
The BNSF is a separate railroad from the UP. Most of the time, this "foreign" power is seen mixed in with home road power when and the engine is working off miles run for the foreign road by the home road engine. For example, the coal deposits in Wyoming are served by both the UP and BNSF. The BNSF may have a shortage of power while the UP has a surplus. The UP engines will then be used on a BNSF train but a record is kept of the engine hours. The BNSF now "owes" the up so many engine hours and they pay them back by running as extra power on UP trains. This type of power sharing is commmon all over the county, which can lead to some interesting lashups.
