Paintwork touching up mostly complete:

It's previous owner who had the unfortunate accident with it was impressed too!

I am now working on a Kato SD40. This was the "CV" repainted one which I originally acquired as a backup for the SD39 project had the original donor proved to be beyond repair.

The paint is off, revealing the model's origins and conversion to SD40 8485, one of the second SP batch of just ten SD40's with some noticeable differences over the larger first batch, is underway.

Espee bought a big batch of SD40's in 1966, 79 to be precise, all pretty standard apart from the nose lights arrangement and matching closely the Kato SD40 model.

When the EMD salesman came to call some months later, the Espee said we'll take another ten of those SD40's you sold us last year. I can imagine that the conversation with the EMD salesman went something like this:

'Same spec as last time Sir?'

'Err, no, let's have them different'

Needless to say my chosen subject 8485 is from that different second batch of ten...

So out comes the filler...

The handbrake has to be removed from the short hood...

Another Details West HB-177 rear platform hand brake stand has been sourced...

And the engineers side cab front window has been modified to the L shaped version!

I thought this was going to be a simple job, nah....

If there is one thing in railroad modelling I detest, it is the abuse of perfectly good models. The prosecution enters the following into evidence...

A perfectly good Atlas S series Alco switcher, probably one of the most reliable models I have operated, this one has not only been subjected to a horrendously poor repaint (looks like it was done with a toothbrush!!!) but has also had a visit from a student of the scratch it off with a blunt screwdriver school of decal removal.

It didn't cost me much and I will see if I can work my magic on it...

I have to admit that I started paint and decal removal via mechanical means before I discovered brake fluid. Tried rubber eraser, scotch tape, but nothing that would damage the loco like a screw driver.
Be careful with brake fluid. It doesn't like some plastics and can craze the surface and make it brittle. Unfortunately, there is no way to know which plastics. The only way to find out is the hard way! I use paint stripper for models. Denatured alcohol works well too. Some have used Pine-Sol to strip.

I use IPA. Shifts most paint fairly easily.

The chassis good, a runner and seems to be a later production example:

The IPA may have an easy job in fact, the green paint (if that is what it is!) is rubbing off on my fingers, it also has a slightly sticky feel to it.

If I can get the cracked glazing part out of the cab, which seems to be stuck fast, it's off to the IPA bath for this!
