Jim, I actually like, that, much more annoying, and alerting then a simple "ding ding ding"...
 
Oh, might I add, with the way we outfit our units with horns (which get stolen allot), it MIGHT be cheaper to attempt a signal as such!
 
It was the first crossing I've seen or heard with both bells and whatever that whistle thing was. I'm also not clear on the flashing lights. It looks like maybe one set flashes if the train is coming on the track closest to you and both flash if the trains is coming on the track furthest from you. I'm also not clear on what those Japanese "Walk/Don't Walk" type signs mean or do.
 
Those are some interesting LED's in that first clip. The second one was funny. In the one closeup of the crossing gate, it's clearly made out of bamboo. :)
