I've Found My Way Back To Model Railroading


I'd never pass 3%, unless, well I have to personally, my "down grade" section is 3.5%, as per the prototype, but 3% if I was making my own freelanced...
 
On my last layout I had a 3.1% grade and a 3.7% grade. While I had a few engines that could pull 8-10 cars up the 3.1% grade, Only one could pull 3 cars up the 3.7% grade.

My current layout maxes the grade at 2%.
 
So I spent the last 2 nights learning XTrkCAD, and set up the layout. And running the trains alerted me to quite the problem. The spurs making up the yard only have the track leading back to the turntable for switching out, and limits the length by a bit.

So now I'm fiddling with it and trying to see if I can't move anything around and get more space out of what I've got. And to clarify, I'm leaving it all flat, now, no grads at all. Too much of a headache.
