I'm finally on my way!

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I like the cabinet and pull out shelf at the end. Should have thought of something like that myself.

Wow! Laid the first track yesterday. In 1 hour I put down 1 section of flex track. 30 years ago, the last time I worked on a layout, it seemed like I was able to do more in that time frame. Now I checked the alignment, then checked it again with the 1X reading glasses, then again another time with the 2X readers. Then took the glasses off to see where the pliers was, put them back on to pick up a track nail, etc. This time around I'm really working at making smooth, derail-free track. So, we'll see how this one goes... :)

Man, I'm flying now! I set a switch and another 30 inches of flex track last night. At this rate I'll be done by Christmas. CHRISTMAS, 2050!

Take your time. You'll never finish anyhow. None of us do. There's always something else you'll want to add or change.;)

Your well honed sense of humor will get you around almost any obstacle... ;)

(edit)By the way... do you have any pictures of your engine and rolling stock? I'd be interested to see what you'll be running.

Hey Rico and Blue. I doubt the layout will ever be 'done'. I am hoping to get the track down soon, though, as I would like to see the train move about.

Tooter: The loco and cars are nothing to look at now. They're just Bachmann RTR stuff. All short wheelbase, dictated by the sharp curves. They will be heavily weathered with limestone dust, so instead of your typically grimy black, these will be pasty white.

I may have created an incline that will tax the 3-car train, so the direction it runs on the little loop is still up in the air.

This may not be a new idea, but...

I'm laying the foam out for my ground and rock contours, but not with a lot of the end result in mind. More specifically, I'm putting down the base as it might have been- had the foam been shaped by glacial action, water runoff, and wind erosion. I'll then go back and make cuts and fills, and level off spots for structures. It will be more work, but I hope to achieve a more natural look. What do you think? Is this a stupid approach?

I did that with an N scale layout once but I didn't glue the sheets down so I could carve the hills and end up with a level surface underneath.
Meant to ask about the loop in your track plan?
Keep those pictures coming...

Kinda what I do.
I place stacks roughly shaped foam till i am happy with shape. I bond them together but not to the layout yet. I can then carry a ridge/hill/wall ect. outside to shape with knives, wire brushes to the final shape. This saves me alot of clean up inside. If i have to work a part inside I run a vac next to work area. Painting and some details can be added before its placed and bonded.

Re: "Meant to ask about the loop in your track plan?"

That will be where the rail line circles down into the quarry pit.

Thanks, folks. I'm glad I'm not skating on new ice with this approach to the foam.
