Hey guys, I am about to start building paved roads on my Modern HO layout but I want to how wide they should be before I start. I am mainly going to have 2 lane roads. So, can anyone give me how wide they should be (in inches)?

Modern highway planners prefer a lane width of 12'. Minimum acceptable lane width is considered 10'.

24 scale feet is about 3 and 3/8 inches.

20 scale feet is about 2 and 3/4 inches.

Don't forget to add room on each side for shoulders. Most roads have at least a five foot wide paved or leveled pull off shoulder. The more modern your era, the more realistic your roads will look with shoulders, fog lines, and good striping.
