How can I tell what size radiator and dynamic brake fans are used on particular locomotives? Looking to see what size dynamic brake fan is used on the SD70M genesis locomotive and the Athearn P40/42?
Do you want to know the fan size on the prototype locomotive or the model? You can easily measure the fans on the model with a caliper.
the real thing. Are they 48" fans?
Josh B. or one of other diesel detail experts can give you the exact answer, but I'd guess that 48" is right or close to right. That has been the standard fan size on EMD high horsepower units for many years now.
josh or anyone, can ya help me out? i can't find crap while googling.
The P42 is something like 60"! It's huge. The standard EMD from the 30 line to the SD70 series is a 48" fan. The smaller fans found on earlier EMD up to the 35 line, are 36". The new standard on the SD70ACe and the SD80/90 is a 52" fan.
GE units usually do not have an exposed round fan, the P32/40/42 (Genesis series) are the exception, and its a cooling fan.
As a second thought, I went an measured my P42's. The Athearn unit is a 6' diameter housing! That's 72"!
72"??!!?? Seriously? Im trying to visualize it in my head as beeing that huge. The models almost look identicle in size, comparing a SD70 dynamic fan grill to the P42 cooling fan grill. I'm stuck at work on a double, i'll have to check tomorrow after work to see.
Only reason I ask, i dont care if its a dynamic brake grill or not. I just need a bunch to finish my P42 models and SD90 models. The molded stuff looks like crap.
