How to paint laser scribed brick?

How have you painted laser scribed brick walls?

This is the first time I have worked with laser scribed brick and I don't want to mess it up. It is a short-run kit, not likely to be produced again. Previously I worked with plastic brick and just wiped grey paint into the seams.

There seem to be two methods:
1. paint the whole thing brick red, then rub powder into the mortar grooves
2. paint the whole thing grey, then dry brush the surface with brick colored paint.

I use real dry wall mud. Thinned with water. Dip a damp rag into the thinned drywall mud, rub it into the grooves. Let it dry. Then wipe clean with damp rag.

Do you use the dry wall mud after painting the wooden walls red?

Yes.

A good color to use is Floquil Box Car Red.
