Wow. Never saw one of these before. This one is in Wills Point, Texas.

Do we have any here in the Great White North?

Oh yea... is this a one way track or do they go up these too??
 
Bernie, I'm sure you do. The telephoto lens is making that short grade look much steepr than it really is. I'd guess that's really about 1% grade and the engineers who first laid out the tracks knew it wasn't a big deal for a train to be able to handle a short stretch of grade than the cost of making a huge cut to eliminate the grade.
 
Just look for short cuts made here---we seem to have a few around the Woodstock ON to London ON stretch that were cut through. Hogbacks are more or less shaped like longer versions of Drumlins up here. I don't think that it'd be fun going up and down anything more than a 1.5% grade---

That photo looks like someone was making grades look like they are 5% grades-----sheesh:eek:
