Yup.
In arithmetic, you have to use the same units on both sides of any = sign or what you get will be meaningless. So, you convert your foot to inches since you want to know what a foot would be in the smaller scale..which we know will certainly be measured in bits of inches, or in single and multiple inches.
Inches with inches, inches to inches, inches times inches,.....etc..
Next, we have to convert those inches to the smaller scale, and we do that by dividing the number we want to convert by the scale conversion factor. This applies to every scale conversion from larger to smaller, no matter what problem you are solving, even for real world drawings and such. If you are converting the other way, from the scale to the real world, you would multiply the scale inches by the conversion factor to the larger scale.
Therefore, your 12" in the real world foot equals 12"/87" which a single inch in HO is known to represent. That reads: twelve inches divided by 87". We can do that in arithmetic if we are willing to use a decimal to represent a fraction. The answer is 0.13793...(and other numbers that your calculator will show that are not significant...we round the first three after the decimal), which rounds to 0.138. Remember we were talking about inches, so you have a bit over one tenth of an inch. If you are really a stickler and are willing to use a caliper of some kind, then it comes to 14 hundredths (rounded again) of an inch.

1 foot 1:1 is, according to simple math, 87 feet 1:87.
So:
1 divided by 87 give us 1/87 of one foot is one foot. 60x 87 = 5,220 feet ; about a modern boxcar short of a mile, or if you are so inclined, a titch above 8.25 inches.
