HO Farm Equipment

Where does everyone get their HO farm equipment? I'm talking about tractors, combines, plows and grain carts.

There are a number of suppliers. Woodland Scenics is where I got a few, but I model the transition era and a lot of what they have is for that period. I have seen more modern equipment out there, but never paid attention to who made it because it was not in my time period. A quick check of a Walthers Catalog will get you results.

Believe it or not our local farm/tool/country clothes store (not a chain) has small scale farm equipment. They even have the equipment organized by scale, including 1/87 for HO. I live in southern Missouri (where there is a lot of cattle raising) so I don't know if Houston has one of these kind of stores.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am actually wanting to model a modern Rice Farming Operation. The hardest thing to find at the moment is grain carts for tractors and grain trailers for semi trucks. Everyone seems to model those in 1/64 scale. I also looked at Tractor Supply and those are also 1/64 scale. I have already purchased some John Deere Combines and trucks off Ebay.

I actually purchased some HO railroad equipment from a guy at the Dupage show a few years ago who was dismantling an HO layout to let his son build a 1/64th scale farm. No mention if they planned on running correct S scale trains with it. Seems the way to go maybe, seeing you run two scales already.

Sorry for the confusion Gary. I do not model anything with 1/64 scale. I was saying that is what is in most of the stores like Tractor Supply. I only model 1/87 scale.

This is similar to what I am looking for. Some of them I have found. They do not have to be exact but you get the idea from the photos. The grain cart, semi grain trailer and the disk harrow are what I am having trouble locating. Lonestar models makes the grain trailer and truck but they have been out of stock for months.

I suggest that you do a search for Farm Toy Shows in your area. I have gone along to Farm Toy shows with friends who collect diecast tractors and farm equipment. Much of what you'll see at these shows, is large 1/16 scale tractors and a fair amount of 1/64 scale as well. Some vendors will have 1/87 scale farm equipment as well. You will also find details, loads and equipment, that may be meant for 1/64 scale, but which will work fine with 1/87 scale.

Most farm equipment dealers sell model farm equipment in many scales. Here in Manitoba the local JOhn Deere and Case dealers have them in 1/87, 1/64 , 1/48 and also much larger models. If it isn't stocked they should be able to order it for you. SS Ltd has some equipment as well. Here's their link.

Just type farm into the search box. I also have an old Magnuson Models grain cart like the one you are looking for. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.Ron

There is a lot more selection, in model farm equipment, in the large scales, i.e. 1/64, 1/32, and 1/16.
Would it be possible to use a 3D scanner, to capture these models, than reduce them, and using a 3D printer, printer them back out in 1/87 scale?

Scanning and resizing is very doable, but the clean up in the drawings would be time consuming. If it were 1940's, and you can get it scanned, I would attempt to try cleaning it up and resizing.

Didn't Boley make some farm vehicles in HO?? I know they are out of business but their items show up at swap meets.

If you have a Northern Tool in your area, sometimes you can get 1/87th farm equip. there. I also use to go to the diff. farm tractor dealers in my area & they usually handle a lot of 1/87th equip. Especially John Deere.

At farm stores here there are a lot of farm toys. Some such as the Ertl ones in blister packs show a scale. Take a scale ruler and a scale figure in a seated pose to a farm store like Tractor Supply. Measure some of those smaller bulk tractors and equipment that they have displayed and set the figure on the seat to see if it looks proportionally correct. I have a bunch of tractors, a couple of dozen maybe, that I got that way. Most of them are small John Deere row crop and crawler tractors.

G'day .....I noticed and bought a couple of farm/ earthmoving items from a German company called Siku...They are diecast..fairly well detailed great quality..and quite cheap too...maybe not perfect for American scenes...in every way because the trucks and bulldozers are European looking...in some ways but graders , tractors , loaders , etc are easily passable...go to the Siku website ...and check it out...They'd definitely be available in the States...I'm sure..Cheers Rod..

G'day...Just a follow up on the Siku stuff....Check out their 1:87 HO....John Deere stuff...On the main Siku website...especially the tractors and harvesters..The Volvo stuff is good too... IF you're looking foe excavators / bulldozers...Norscot is good...I bought two Caterpillar D9Ts last year...a low loader and a 320L cat excavator from a place here in Melbourne Australia...Classic Bargains..for all up..$155..in two orders...Great detail...Cheers Rod
