That Treaty of Versailles was so harsh on the German economy and its citizens it lead to WWII.
Another consequence that has great implications today was the way the British and French split up the Ottoman empire. Representatives of those two nations sat down at a map and split up the Middle East without regard to religions or ethnicities. The Kurds, for example were divided so part of them were in one country and part in another, and neither liked or wanted them. Suni and Shia Muslims were force together. France got Lebanon, with both Arabs and Christians. The British got Palestine with both Muslims and Jews. The UN attempted to "solve" the problem of the British mandate by setting up an alternating checkerboard for Muslims and Jews. When the Muslims countries attempted to get rid of the Jews, they fought back and created Israel. Iran and Saudi Arabia hate each other with a passion. And it ain't over yet!

On this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress The document—which announced the separation of the 13 colonies from Great Britain—was met with scorn by British officials. Fighting dragged on for years, and when the American Revelation finally ended in 1783, the colonies were victorious and went on to form the United States of America July 4 subsequently became a national holiday.

July 8, 1947

On this day in 1947, the Roswell Daily Record erroneously reported that the previous day, soldiers at the Roswell Army Air Field in New Mexico had recovered the remains of a flying saucer that had crashed on a local ranch. Although that claim was quickly refuted by authorities, the Roswell incident eventually became the center of a flying saucer mania that soon gripped the country.
