P.Y. Barnum James Bailey

For years as kids we’d go the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus. 1st under a tent in the Solders Field parking lots and later in the old Chicago Stadium. At Solders Field the train was across the road and we went once and it was a spectacle watching the elephants pulling the circus wagons off the flat cars and crossing the road. Had to have tickets though to watch the big tent go up.

I thought this show was out of business but it’s been revamped per Wikipedia. We took the grand kids a few years ago for a show at Circus World museum in Baraboo. That is where the Ringling Brothers circus started.

Wow memories !!!

On this day in 1963, the prison on San Francisco Bay's Alcatraz Island was formally shut down by the government. It had long held famous prisoners such as Al Capone and Robert Stroud (nicknamed the “Birdman of Alcatraz”). During its operation, 36 men attempted to escape—and five are still listed as “missing and presumed drowned.” The prison was ultimately shut down because of high costs. Months after becoming a part of the National Park Service, Alcatraz Island had more visitors than in the previous 120 years combined.
