The Star-Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812, was officially adopted as the national anthem of the United States by act of Congress.
It is too bad that 95% of American's only know the first verse "sports" event version of the anthem.

I tried like mad to get NASCAR to do the whole thing on their first race after 911 because the 3rd verse, "the Star Spangled Banner in triumph doth wave" was so fitting. But nope, TV time and $$$ wins over being proper.

"It is too bad that 95% of American's only know the first verse "sports" event version of the anthem."

"Then conquer we must,
when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto, "In God Is Our Trust"
And the Star -Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave,
O're the Land of the Free,
And the home of the brave!"

For those who ask, "Why?", I respond, a country that has already placed satellites in orbit, the only thing that precludes sending an ICBM would be if they had not solved the reentry problem. It also takes little more effort to enrich 60% Uranium to 90% (weapons grade). Even if not enriched beyond 60 %, all it would take would be to wrap a bunch of the 60% around high explosives to create a "dirty bomb" that would scatter enough radioactive material to mess up a fair area of a major city! (Think Chernobyl.) Worse, would be a full, high order nuke. In other words, we have had no choice!

Mar 12, 1852

On this day in 1852, the first popular and widespread image of Uncle Sam appeared in an American publication.. The cartoon is credited to Frank Bellew, an illustrator for The Lantern, who made “Raising the Wind”—the political cartoon in which Uncle Sam first appeared. An imposing whiskered gentleman with a top hat and striped trousers, he would serve as an symbol of the United States for years to come, especially in U.S. Army recruitment posters and fliers.

My first cousin bought one of those in 1968, just like that one. His was baby blue, or powder blue though. When I was a little kid, he tried to get me clean those wire wheels. Didn't happen.
