February 28, 2026, is the 199th anniversary of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States. It was chartered February 28, 1827, by the Maryland Legislature and the Commonwealth of Virginia on March 8, 1827.

The B&O Railroad was officially chartered in 1827, making history as the first common carrier railroad in the United States. Throughout history, the railroad has made its impact on America from time zones to pop culture references like the Monopoly board! Next year, we will turn 200 years old and officially celebrate 200 years of American railroading. And with that anniversary comes so much excitement and growth for us as a Museum. And while the future is looking bright, we want to take the time to thank you in the present for supporting the B&O. We couldn’t imagine spending our birthday with anyone else.
🎉
Here’s to another year of celebrating American railroading!
