Help this novice with starting a layout

i did alot of research about building layouts on these forums. some people will use just foam as a base if they have a girder support system underneath. as long as they don't plan on standing or leaning on it. i use peco turnouts as most people say they are very good. and so far mine have been working great. i got a good deal on peco flex track at a train show so i used that.
good info, thanks for replying!!

Please use foam! The reasoning here is that you can carve out rivers, creeks and gullies, that sort of thing. "Flat" railroads on 4x8 are stuff of 1949. In this photo you can see what I mean. The track is on the top of the foam and gully is cut down to the plywood support sheet.

Here is another reason to use foam. This railroad I built is a larger gauge and smaller than 4x8. Much can be accomplished in HO. You may hook up with my thread above. Over a MILLION views so it may be worth your time.
