This Bachmann power supply has a plug that plugs into the power pack (instead of two wires) and a plug that plugs into the track. How can I use this power supply with Atlas Code 83 snap track? Do I just have to cut the plug off that goes into the track so I can connect those wires to a terminal track? If so, how will I know which wire goes to which plug (they both appear to be red wires, very small guage)?

Sorry, I'm new to this, but I wanted to get away from the bachman ez track and use atlas code 83, and hope I don't have to buy a new power pack.

Thanks for helping a newbie out.

That's an extremely basic "toy type" Bachmann power pack, it might be worth while looking into a better one in any case. Wires can go from either mounting post to either track, it doesn't make any difference.

Modelers usually solder wires to the bottom of the track for permanent trouble free operation. Just cut off the plug that goes to the track, remove the plastic insulation carefully so you don't cut the small wire strands inside, and fasten the wires to the track.

There are 9" sections of snap track available that have wire attachment screws with them, but they are probably not code 83.

I believe Atlas now makes a 9" terminal track piece in code 83.
I would agree with Bob about getting a better power pack. I would go with a MRC Tech 4.

I had a smiliar power pack that came with a train set I got for my son a couple years ago. I have a power cord that has the "head phone" jack and just goes to 2 bare wires. I thought it came with that train set. I also have the one you are talking about. But as others have said, just cut off that connector and hook it up. Atlas makes rail joiners that have wires coming off them. These are handy if you do not want to solder the wires to the track or if you do not want to use a terminal track. I am not sure if there is a difference in Code 100 and 83 rail joiners.

To answer your question about which way the wires get hooked up... It doesn't really matter. All that will happen is the train will go one go a different direction if you swap the wires. If you want the train to go a certain direction on your layout when the direction button is pushed to the right, then just temporarily attach the wires to the track and see what direction the train runs. Once you find out what way to make the trains move the direction you want in relation to the direction switch, then screw them to the terminals or solder them.
