Hey, just joined and wanted to say hello! I'm a complete newbie, just getting started in the model railroad world. For now I'm N scale, but could switch to HO, not sure yet.

Anyways, hello everyone.

Welcome! You'll hopefully settle on one scale and then go through a methodical exploration of your entry to the hobby. It has a few stumbling blocks, mostly borne of ignorance...as in all ventures. We'll do our best to guide you through the muck so that you come out on the other side happy, not spent into the poor house, and able to enjoy your trains.

Welcome Aburns11 !!!!
On this forum, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask!!

My problem is I'm not smart enough to think of questions to ask.
Of course, I don't ask directions when I'm lost, either.:o\

Thanks for the welcome! I think I'm going to delve into N scale, I have some stock already. I really want my first venture to be with a small grain operation, I think it would be a great place to start. Though from the little research I have been doing, I should probably look into starting some scratching building for my grain elevator, etc.

But yes, thanks for the welcome everyone!

Welcome this guys are great. I have been told that when you share the information that you know that is the greastest gift you can give. I have been helped more in the last two days than I have ever been with any hobby or sport I have ever done.:)

Welcome aboard, Mr. Burns. :) You've chosen a great hobby. The scale will come to you but it's all trains so it's all good. Grain elevators are one thing the hobby is not short of. Check at www.walthers.com and I'll bet you can find a grain elevator kit. Scratchbuilding is fun but maybe you should save that for your second structure. :D

Hah! Ok, yeah, well maybe I will think about scratch building for a second structure. I am into a more modern era though, do you guys have any suggestions for some good Walthers (or other companies for that matter) grain elevators for N scale? But yeah, I will definitely share my progress with my first setup with you guys so I can get some feedback and to share what I have done!

Grain elevators have changed very little in terms of construction over the past 60 or so years. About the only way you can tell a new elevator from an older one is that the concrete isn't as weathered and the head house is probably built from aluminum instead of wood. The real change has been the consolidation of smaller elevators into larger complexes. There used to be a grain elevator with four or five silos at almost every crossroads in the midwest. As roads improved, it became cheaper to truck grain to larger towns, where complexes with 30-100 silos were built. Many of the smaller grain elevators were abandoned and demolished. So, if you want to model today, prepare to allocated some space to grain operations since most complexes are pretty large.
