new to the forum been out of modeling for 40 odd years started with lionel most all gone but a few pieces now working with ho ..building a smal switching layout right now looking to build grandkids a larger layout and work it into it...always looking for tips and such..

Grandkids going to be involved in the construction, or just yourself? I would consider O gauge or G gauge for youngsters, although many have handled HO and even N scale items safely and carefully. Depends....
Are you going to run straight DC, maybe run the new digital command setup? Many engines come with a sound and motive decoder in them that requires a digital command system to operate them. They sound great, though.
