Hi everyone, I figured I'd introduce myself after using this forum for tips and tricks the last few months. My oldest son has been interested in trains for years and I had a small 4x6 starter set and layout for him based on one of the Presidents choice sets. After a few years, the old layout was a little too basic for him, and along with his younger brother showing I interest as well, we decided to move it to some larger space and expand. First to 4x8, then 8x8 L, now finally to 12x8 L style. Now that we've taken up just about as much room as we can with it, we've finalized the track layout, laid a rough cork roadbed and put in quite a few hours building a dual tunnel mountain. I'm building a control panel for 4 power packs, 1 of those just for running accessories, the bus switches and and the turnout controls. Once we figure out what he wants to do with other scenery and placement of buildings I'll trim down the cork and finish painting.

Thanks. Yes, its running 4ft wide throughout, 42" high so that under it can double for a playhouse for my 4 year old when he gets bored watching us work on the layout and easier on the back but still allow enough reach to the middle. I'm planning on a background to lightly secure to the studded wall that can be easily removed if needed to access the back run of rail and built in a back hatch to the mountain for the same purpose.

Redline22, Looks like a really great start. You realize that you could be setting your boys up for a lifetime addiction to model railroading! Even with 20-odd year breaks, you will come back to it! ;) I know, because I am on my fourth layout over the past 70 years, even with breaks for college, Air Force and several moves! :)
Hi-ball!

I think or at least hope I'll be semi prepared if they take up the habit or if I go back and forth trailrider. I built it into 4x4 modules just in case of storage or if the kids eventually want to split the set and either Elmer's white glue or a glue gun was used to secure just about everything, so it shouldnt be a huge fight to remove anything from the surface if need be. I think we are at 35-40 railcars and close to 20 engines in the collection so they should have enough for just about all options in the future. I'm just happy to do something with the kids to keep them occupied, out of trouble and safe with everything Covid has brought, but I think the wife is getting sick of the steady stream of packages coming. With the nearest hobby store 4-5hrs away, it doesn't leave much other options than eBay or Amazon unfortunately.
