Guide To Freight Cars

well that can be a can of worms...

It depends what you are looking for...

are you looking for types made or owned by RI?

or types of freight cars in general?

If you are looking for what RI.... http://www.rits.org/ has a periodical that goes out and time to time release info...

then there is Morning Sun books http://www.morningsunbooks.com/alphalisting.html#R

but if you looking in general there millions of other books out there...I guess if you refine you search to specifics it will be easier to find the info....

I would say mostly RI but everything else at the same time. I'm still a newb at this and my knowledge is still very limited. Differences such as how to tell a 4740 from a 4750 covered hopper or a late or early ACF based on the stiffener.

An all-around freight car book would probably serve me well. I was looking at the Kalmbach Freight Car guide on Amazon for $15.

well macjet that is a good start too and can help explain a lot of stuff for ya ...but it wouldnt hurt to also look at material for your road RI.

If you really want to know just about everything about freight cars, check out http://railroadcarhistory.com/. You get the books on CD's as PDF files and they contain just about every freight car from the Civil War to modern times. You can choose specific types of cars, specific eras, or general history. I've gotten a few of these for the prototype photos and the work is outstanding. I think it's much more accurate than any print books and a better deal as well since there's no fluff.
