I know I could take a GP9 and covert it to a -10. Can I do the same thing with a GP18? There are some low nose 18's available and I'd rather not have to start chopping noses. Close enough is good enough in my case. Would it work?

The fan arrangement on a GP18 is the equivalent of a phase 3 GP9......if that doesn't work for you, you can take an Atlas GP7/9 shell and add it to the GP18 . On the LL GP18 with the low nose, the nose isn't attached to the long hood,so you just cut the atlas shell in the area the sits under the cab (cut anywhere, it doesn't matter) and replace the long hood of the GP18 with the GP9 long hood. You do need to cut 2 notches in the walkway for the tabs on the atlas hood, or cut the tabs off and glue the long hood to the walkway. An even better option is take a new Proto GP18 with the high hood and add the low nose and cab from an Atlas SD24.The only mod is to shorten the leads on the front LED. The Proto GP18 is much better than the old model. I've used both methods to make chop nose GP9's.

Thanks. I've got two GP20's that will be repainted to Farmrail colors. I guess the GP7/9/10/18/20 are all just variants of the same engine. I need to make the one piece windshield on the 20's a two piece and I was looking for an easier way to make a GP10. I'm not too sure of my abilities to start cutting noses down. I think I'll take a shot with 18 conversion.

GP10's tend to be built by individual shops, so they vary a lot, but the GP20 is definitely different than the 7/9/18. The 20 does not have the air tanks slung under the frame next to the fuel tank, the fans are in slightly different locations, the exhaust is for a turbocharged engine and the nose has a noticable slope to it, plus the windshield you already mentioned is different.....theGP18 is definitely the way to go.
