There has never been a model of GMD1u made in plastic. I think I remember seeing a brass model of this locomotive about 15 years ago made by Overland, I think. This is a great candidate for a kitbash. You could use an SW1500 as a start and then kitbash the short hood with styrene. There may even be a Canadian company that sells some detail parts of this model. Do a Google search and see what you come up.
Boy, it seems longer than 8 years ago but I guess not. I found one at http://www.cvrco.com/brass.htm but be prepared for sticker shock. It's unpainted and going for $1100. I think I could do a reasonably good job of kitbashing for a few bucks less than that.
I figured it would be pretty rare. I could never justify $1100 on finicky brass. I have never kit bashed or scratch built a loco before, but I guess it would be worth a try and allot cheaper. There is a guy on this forum that does allot of Burlington Northern switcher kit bashing, he might be the guy for a job like this. His forum name is slipping my mind right now, my apologies.
I can't see someone like Athearn or Atlas making a model of this loco because there would be only two road names. 96 units went to Canadian National and the other 5 went to Northern Alberta Railway. Not a big market demand for only two Canadian road names.
Yeah, Jerome might be just the guy to take on this kind of project. Send him a PM if he doesn't see this thread and see how much he would charge. I'm sure it would be less than $1100.
It just dawned upon me, I think Kaslo has a resin one, or planned to make a resin one. Only problem is their site has gone to crap, and nothing works on it (been that way for months now).
Kaslo owns the dies to make one in Resin. It was originally done by another company that is now out of business. It won't hurt to drop Kaslo an email showing you are interested in one, it may help convince them to re-run them. I keep asking, but no luck yet.
I was at a small train show this past weekend and wouldn't you know it a guy had a layout there with two GMD's. Both were brass and only one ran (not very well mind you).

That would not get you a very good looking GMD1. Not even close. Absolutely none of the features of the SW cut up to piece together the drawing have any similarity to a GMD1.
