bachmann spectrum. 8-40(i think). older one. now they make them diferrent

Thank You. This one doesn't have a headlite or anyplace to plug one in. I took it apart today because it wouldn't run. It had a ton of corrosion between the frames, around the contacts, around the trucks & the coupler housings. Cleaned it all w/a small wire brush & then brushed on a thin film of lubriplate. Put it back together & it runs like a clock. Wonder if there's anyway to hook up a headlite since there's no hookups anyplace.

The old frames had the headlights mounted on a shell-mounted circuit board that ran the length of the shell. Contact was a couple of spring clips, one on each frame half.

I have some of those off other engines, but, where would they get power from since all electrical contacts are hidden?

the frame is the electrical contact from what i see.
the one i have was modified - it was wired much like new ones from the trucks bypassing those half moon clips. good idea i think. the light board that was on top just had 2 springs to push against the frame to pick up power from. try multimeter, i think that frame is conductive

I think that depression behind the engineer was where the spring clips fit for the lighting board. I don't know if you can still get them from Bachmann.

I think you're right about the frame being conductive. I got a slight shock a cpl. times when I was using the test track to run it by touching the frame & touching the track at the same time. I'll check it w/my multimeter. I have a lite board out of another engine w/clips that I can probably make fit.

have several of those, still running great. The frame is the conductor, one half/side is +, otehr is -. very clever engineering.

nahh, its an idea, it works, it is nice to have "brick of metal" construction but i wouldn't go as far as calling that clever engineering. i don't like how the pickup from the trucks is accomplished, hence the wire pickup mod on these (almost like the new version) and DCC conversion is also going to be fun. i think the new frame is a huge step forward
