Dad had a CJ 5. It was nearly my first roll over accident as a driver on a gravel dirt road. I remember him (He was a retired Marine, so he had seen it all) reaching for the wheel from the passenger's seat and then backing off. I assume because to pull the wheel closer would only have rolled us over--he had no control of the pedals. So he let me run it out. I climbed the CJ-5 up the inside embankment not having overturned after all.
^ My little story.
As regards the DUCW. He was the first platoon leader of the First Shore Party battalion, of the the First Marine Division. Korea, at Pusan. These were the guys in charge of the actual landings.
But he told me a story: Excersize. He's in command of a DUCKW, about seven miles off the beach, back of Camp Pendelton in CA. Six inches of freeboard, bailing like mad, and two panicked Marines in his boat who can't swim.
They made the beach. But had they not, he would have proffered himself as flotsam. I'm sure he would.
