Most cases if the damage is minor they repair them, If the loco is burnt out and mangled then they normally replace it. It also depends on the age of the loco and the RR policy.
 


I liked how the CSX spokesman described a "12,000 gallon spill of non-hazardous petroleum oil"! How the heck can petroleum of any kind be non-hazardous?
 
That's actually CSXT 7918, not Conrail. Notice the yellow numbers. It it had been a Conrail unit, it would still have white numbers. At that, its still got LMS paint!

Also, of note the yellow letters on the CSX unit, that's an AC6000, still equipped with the 6000hp prime mover.

Diesel fuel is non hazardous unless it's burning. people forget that petroleum is natural and from the ground. If it seeped back into the ground it would be just going home :D
