I am planning on getting the Digitrax Zephyr Express starter set.
I want to get the Kato Amtrak P42 starter set - Kato 106-6285 for my first train.
Last but definitely not least, I am looking at a decoder for the P42 in that starter set. I found the "N DCC Decoder, Kato MP36PH 6-Function 1A". How do I find out if this decoder is compatible with the Digitrax and P42 engine?
Thank you as always!!

Looks like this is the decoder.
Fits many Kato N-locomotives Drop-in light board replacement decoder for Kato “K0” form-factor boards 1.0 Amp/2 Amps Peak 6 FX3 Functions, 200ma output

The Zephyr should be compatible with any decoder. I've had zephyrs since 2004 and I have yet to find a decoder it couldn't control. That said, bith the Zeohyr and the decoders conform to the NMRA standards so they will work together.

Thanks for all that great information! I bookmarked that Digitrax selector page as I am sure I will be going back to that quite a bit.
I am curious how you got the decoder part you listed. I went to the Digitrax selector and entered the following:
Scale: N
Brand: Kato
Engine: P42
The two products it came back with was the DN163K0A (regular decoder?) and SDN144K0A (decoder with sound?)
Did I select that correctly?

Yes.
If you click on the decoder, it tells me that the DN163KOA is no longer available, and the new decoder part# is DN167KOA.
My bad - I did not notice that before. Thanks for pointing it out!
And I bought my Digitrax Zephyr Express today!!!! Now I just need an Amtrak engine or three to actually control with it!
Thanks again for the Decoder information and the Digitrax product selector site!
