Finally, Santafewillies layout thread - revived Feb 2026

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

We now continue to move south along the railroad in the town of Vernon. The main drag in Vernon runs roughly alongside of the RR ROW, with a lot of the downtown businesses facing the tracks, and thus the aisle. I left off with this view of the next three structures lined up next to Harrison's Hardware.

All three are generic structures from Smalltown USA. First up is the Rexall Drugs store, quite common in the mid-century but no longer around.

If I recall correctly, Smalltown sells this kit as Roy’s Fix-it. For the interior, I just copied, scaled and printed drugstore interiors from the Internet.
Next as a tribute to my wife's longtime ex-employer is an H&R Block office.

This kit is known as Vivian’s Family Shoes in the Smalltown catalog. Note the doctor's office upstairs.
1771606740262.jpeg

My next structure on the corner is the Bonnie B Boutique, which is the Smalltown name for this kit.
1771606885104.jpeg

That's Bonnie relaxing on the balcony while her employees run the store.
Across the road is Don's Pizza. Yet another structure kit from Smalltown known as John’s Place.

Upstairs is a detective agency and a palm reader.
1771607199898.jpeg

Staying in the Smalltown mode, we come to Wholesale Electrical Supply, known as Parcel Delivery Service in their catalog. I no longer see this one on their website.
1771607654337.jpeg

Continuing south along the road is the Argosy Booksellers.
1771607776971.jpeg

1771607795498.jpeg

This is a DPM kit called Robert's Dry Goods. Again, the interior is from some pictures that I found on the Internet.

Next stop is a grocery store and then some area that's not completely developed yet.
Thank you for looking.

Time for another post. I left off at the book store and today I'll pick up with Jim's Red Owl grocery store. This is a Walther's kit of the same name, depicting what I believe was a small town grocery chain.

1771694873488.jpeg

I don't remember whether I provided the interiors or if they came with the kit.
Continuing further south, we come to City Hall
1771694933389.jpeg

This is a scratchbuilt structure made from Walther's Modular Walls; which are no longer made.
From here south, I have structures but no scenery.
1771702945819.jpeg

From R to L, are The Modern Salon from City Classics; and The Second Class Saloon from Grandt Line.
1771703007084.jpeg

Just a matter of time before the city paves the street out front.
Skelly General Engineer's comes next.
1771703271426.jpeg

This may or may not become a permanent part of the layout. It is a free downloadable cardstock background structure that I got from a long-forgotten website. I added the downspouts and light fixture over the door.
There's a blank space and then a few residential structures, a pre-school and a church.

Meanwhile on the aisle side of the tracks, are the slivers of some backyards, part of which is visible in photos #4 and #6 above, and one shown here.

That's it for now, more to come soon.
Thanks for looking.

Another chapter today. As I posted previously, I have an unscenicked area in the corner in this town.

1772902615969.jpeg

I do have a series of backyards up to the railroad ROW to fill the space between the fascia and tracks. Here are two of them.

1772902753665.jpeg

Then we come to another neighborhood.
1772902948310.jpeg
1772902976386.jpeg

Already seen in picture #2 is Tommy's house, a very ancient Model Power kit that I've had since the 80's.

1772903176640.jpeg

And in the backyard is another very old white-metal kit from Woodland Scenics called Tommy's Tree House.
1772903271332.jpeg

Only the figure on the tire swing came with the kit; the rest are hand-painted by me. While I have had this kit for over 30 years, It's still available on their website today.

Thanks for looking and I will return soon.

And for Kevin who spotted it in a previous post, here's another picture of the "Elco".

This is also quite old. It is a clear plastic kit from Williams Bros. They sold these kits in the last century. They're still in business but their HO kits are in limbo right now as they rebuild their business.

I like that El Camino. My parents had one a long time ago, I asked my father what year it was and he thinks it was either a '78 or a '79. Theirs was brown though. Not sure if they have any pictures of it.
