My dad would make hookups every 10'-12' on his Lionel layout.
With a GW-180, you could run two trains at once, carefully, but they would both have to be running the same direction at the same time. No independent control, and unless you wired on/off switches and have isolated blocks wired to that switch, you could not turn one off and on while running the other. On a typical setup, only the center rail needs to be isolated.

Well i ended up doing about 13 jumpers total about every 6 sections of track or so seems to be ok

That is really good. One can never have "too many" jumpers.
