I'm trying to get into using car cards + waybills. Printing them up was the easy part; now I need to figure out what to do for the pockets that hold the cards on the fascia during op sessions.
I tried browsing the Staples online catalog but didn't see anything there that wasn't overpriced. If I could find enough sheet styrene I could probably make my own, but I don't know where to find it other than the high-priced Evergreen stuff at the LHS. All I need is a bunch of little plastic** pockets ~3" wide, 3" tall and a half-inch deep. There must be something out there I can use as a basis for making ~60 of these things, but my imagination's running dry at the moment. Any ideas?
1/8" thick Plexi glass, table top scroll saw, and some weld-on glue! what ever you use your going to have to make it tough to hold up to being bumped in to and crap snaging them! Myself I would make um out of Plexi......... I'm use to working with poly carbs... so, Plexi would look sharp if done right! How many do you need? Plxi should run around $6-8 a SQFT.
I'm building mine out of 1/4" x 1" pine wood and a front cover of 1/4" thick Masonite hardboard. Gluing and nailing it together. That way I can make them any size I want! Just a thought.
Of all the ideas I read, I'll most likely go with Jim's and get the business card pockets. I need ~ 50 of them, and this approach doesn't require me to do any cutting. However, I would drill holes and use screws to mount them rather than relying on the self-stick pads.
Well not exactly car cards, but I used these business card holders from Staples with the stand cut down for my defect cards and incident reports.
I like those pockets too Jim, and the other ideas, may need those when I go the car card route too!
In my local Borders, I found "Trading Card holders" Little plastic pockets for those card-thingies that kids swap between each other - they hold a car card, and keep it clean, and you can pop a waybill in there too
Rico - I saw those card holders like the ones in your pic when I went to Staple's. I chose the ones at OfficeSuppliesLane because they have more vertical depth, the Staples ones are horizontal.
How many cards do they hold Ken?
They look like they'd be thinner than what I have.
We don't have that store around here, maybe I can find them elsewhere...
Well the good news is they arrived at my door this afternoon - next-day delivery, man thats fast! Bad news is, they're not what I thought they were. They're made of vinyl, and totally flat - can only fit 2 or 3 cards in there, max. So back to the drawing board...
Does anybody know whatever happened to Reed (or is it Reid) Plastics of Baltimore? I did a google search but only saw links to them in FL and CA. I need to find a place where I can get a 4x8 sheet of .030" styrene at a decent price. I hope I won't be forced to go the Evergreen route...
Sorry those didn't work out for you, Ken. I don't know about any plastic dealers around your area but http://www.sdplastics.com/hips/highimpactstyrenesheet.html has .030 48"x96" sheet styrene for $14.14. I don't know if the shipping costs would be a killer but I've used San Diego Plastics when I lived in California and they always had the best prices on sheet styrene.
I decided to use particle board for my card slots. Went to my friendly neighborhood Home Depot and picked 2 2'x4' sheets. When I asked the HD table saw operator how much it would cost me to get more than 3 cuts, he said he wouldn't charge me since he was 'bored out of his head'. So I got him to cut me ~15 3-inch-wide, 4-foot strips. Spent most of the afternoon using my miter saw to make over 300 cuts so I could get all the correct-shaped pieces for 60 card slots. Now I've started assembling them. I had just finished my 4th one when I got called to supper.
