I have now begun looking for building kits to put on my layout. I am looking for a kit to represent a modern diesel terminal. I was looking at both the Walthers Backshop kit and the Pikestuff shops kit. I was wondering if either of them needed modification to the plywood surface I will be placing it on(ie. cutting a hole in the plywood for the structure to fit into). I was also wondering about the complexity of the kits as I am not very good at building kits. Thanks in advance

I would think that the Pikestuff one is easier to build.

And as far as I can tell and have seen, no cutting required on the base.

The walthers one would probably look a TON better though. The pikestuff one is rather, bland.

cmbeal317,

Here's what I did with the Pike's Stuff enginehouse kit.

Here's the larger enginehouse not painted yet. I combined 3 kits into 1 for this building.

Dan, it is a bit on the big side. 3' long LOL The other one I just kinda kit bashed out of a pikestuff building kit and a lot of Plastic-Struct structural "I" beams. It will be my open-air painting facility eventually.

For a modern railroad, it's hard to beat the Pikestuff enginehouse, especially since it's so easy to kitbash. For a railroad with older facilities, the Walthers Backshop will look really good.

Pikestuff!

I always thought that the Pikestuff was rather bland, but Wheeler1963 just sold me on them with those outstanding engine sheds. I'm running over to Trains & Lanes this weekend!

Nicely done!

David, if you can spot an modern aluminum building around your area. Take a walk around it, there are so many details you can add to these types of buildings. The only limits are your imagination!! :)
