Well A few years back I was at Ault Colorado waiting for the Challenger to run by. Well in the morning it went storming by and got about 2 pictures of it. Since my computer that I had crashed loosing all the pictures I had. Well that Evening I was waiting at Ault for its return trip to Denver from Cheyenne and well down the line a train broke a Coupler so the 3985 stopped in Ault. Something on it wasnt the same as the morning. They had installed Elephant ears for the one run and I had photos of it. I may still but will have to look for them. Here is my Challenger with Elephant ears.
Should I keep them or what? Whats your thoughts...
Yeah, you should keep the elephant ears. I'm not a great fan of them but they were defining look for the Challenger.
Well the way they are installed they are easy to remove. However I had to drill 6 small holes in the Smokebox for them. However that makes them interchangeable with the Big Boy if I ever get it running. However I was planning on weathering the Big Boy and using it as a Freight only locomotive.
What I think is odd is that they were on the 4019. Did it ever have elephant ears installed?, all the pictures of it that I have seen dont have them installed.
I like the way they look myself - I was wondering.
I have the same thing - Challenger 3985 from Athearn, but N scale. Do they make detachable ears for it too?
Kyle
Well I would imagine they do, However I Got the Big Boy 4019 and thats where I got the ears from. I removed them from the 4019 and put them on the 3985. However I would think that you could order a set of them from Athearn, All you would need is the part number I would think.
A note on the big boy and the Challenger, Make sure to tighten down the small nut on the running gear as many times as you can. They will come loose and are very hard to find. Not that I have lost any of them yet but they would be very hard to find.
Thanks for the info Don - will do!
Do you know how I could go about finding the part numbers for the N scale?
Kyle
They are called deflectors but dont know part number
