Good morning and a HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.
I just purchased a Kadee MAGNA_ELECTRIC uncoupler.
I didn't realize that it required almost 2" below the track. I some of my lower areas I only have 1" of styro, at that point I would have to cut into the plywood base.
Does anyone know of a less bulky electro uncoupler?
Mac
I don't know of any commercially produced aside from Kadee but I've seen magazine articles on making your own. Don't remember the space needed though.
I have thought about using the method we used to build telegraph keys back when I was a science fair dork. Wrap an appropriate amount of stiff insulated wire around a nail or similar and apply D C. I really don't see why it would work, the whole idea is to pull down the little K-D mechanism and let the coupler face open. To make is more shallow in the roadbed, you might try using a very large flat top screw/bolt/something, and increase the mass and shorten the depth - that way. You might find some auto body items that will have to be cut down to fit in the track spacing, HO & O should be fairly easy.
