I believe that is the correct process. I've also heard of folks adding a drop or three of paint to the water product of choice. Of course, there's a very good chance that I don't have a clue what I'm talking about!:D

Yeah like you said they paint the bottom and then a add in the "water". Before pouring the liquid is also the time to add in any details like rocks or fishermen and animals wading in the water.

Looks like those early Atlas chassis are really working for ya, bit might I make a suggestion. A little squadron putty & some paint goes a long way into making those fuel tanks look better. Hides that early Atlas look!

Jeffrey,
What's that white wire for running from 1 engine to the next? Is that like a tow cable?

That wire connects the pickups of the two locos together so they can pick up power over a wider area. There's another wire on the other side. Each loco has it's own motor and decoder but the power pickups of both locos are connected together.

How do you store them, always together?
You got it. They're run together and they're stored together. They're both 70's era Atlas GP40's so the drives are identical with the exception of the flywheels. One has steel flywheels while the other has brass flywheels. Cosmetically they're different. The lead unit has a Bachmann shell while the trailing unit is all Atlas. Both have Digitrax DZ125 decoders and are speed matched. The speed matching was done BEFORE they were tethered together.
