Hi all, I'm in the process of rebuilding my layout and it will include helixes. I'd really like to know if I can run double-stack well cars, but I'm not sure they will fit.

If my models were within easy reach I'd simply place them on some track and get a vertical measurement myself. But they're packed away in separate boxes, not clearly labeled, buried under other boxes in a hard-to-reach location. If one of you modern-era modelers could get that vertical measurement on one of your own models, it would save me a heluva lot of time and trouble. Could you help me out with this?

Thanx in advance...

22' of clearance is what's usually need for double stack clearance. That's about 3.1" in HO scale.

I've got from 2-7/8" to 3" on my cars. (HO)
My clearance on average is 3-1/4", more where it's available.
In hidden staging it's not always possible to get the most clearance but it's best to get all you can.

Rico/Andy - Thanks, I knew I could count on you guys! Looks like my 4" planned separation between rings will work after all.

The staging tracks will be 12" below the main deck, to allow for hand/wrist clearance and wiring of the tracks above.

I dont think double stacks are any taller then excessive height cars like hi-cubes are they?

Actually most Hi-Cubes are Plate E or F Verses Plate H for Double stacks and Racks. Here is a list of Max Heights for each Plate, there is more to it as Width and Truck Centers are included in the calculation to.

Plate B - 15 ft 1 in
Plate C - 15 ft 6 in
Plate D - 15 ft 1 in
Plate E - 15 ft 9 in
Plate F - 17 ft 0 in
Plate H - 20 ft 2 in
