DCC decoder in old Loco.

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

The old trainset Bachmanns as well as the older bachmann steam engines have split frames which makes installing DCC challenging, but not impossible. If it has a pancake motor in it, then it will need to go as it may draw too much power and break the decoder.

Besides that, older Bachmann steamers have many problems such as axles warping, axle gears binding, siderods binding, etc, which may not be easy to fix.

While it is older. It was bought new in box from a local train shop owner who has been in the business here for a long time. I set it up on its oval and runs perfect.

That appears to be one of the newer spilt frame Bachmann 0-6-0's. There's not much room to install a decoder so a Z scale one like the Lenz 103XF and NCE D102 should work. I would give the guys at Tony's Train Exchange a call on Monday at 800-978-3472. They know just about everything when it comes to DCC and will give you the straight dope on installing a decoder in this engine.

I'll be calling Tony's. And for those interested here's the engine breakdown sheet and the parts list. (even have the lifetime warranty card)
