Larry

Long Winded Old Fart
Tried to get my RR workshop heated up to do some engine work, Didn't, so I'm back in the house here on the forum.
The train room temp. was 28* & decided to wait till tomorrow. The wind is at 25 mph plus & that makes it worse. M:oaybe tomorrow.

I hear ya Larry, I built my layout in the coldest room in the house but it was a trade off. The other room had overhead plumbing so I passed on that one!
Actually not so bad until the temp reaches the same on both scales... -40!

Rico, I was stationed in Newfoundland in 1957 & 58 & remember what 40 to 60 below zero felt like w/8 to 10ft of snow on the ground.

Well, it's 20 degree's again this morning. Not any chance of going in the trainroom today.
Maybe get the workshop heated up for this afternoon & do some work after 2pm. Hope.

You know guys, since I know here in Chicago there will be days from December to March that I can't stand it in my basement workshop and train room, I try to assemble some projects I can keep up stairs and work on on the kitchen table. This year I'm painting (acrylics, of course) a bunch of figures. Just something to keep me busy and not tick off the wife.

Well, I finally had a few hours to work in my RR workshop after the heaters got it warmed up. Worked on my 3rd B unit made from an Atlas RSD4/5. had to make some add-on handrails & fill the holes in the top of the shell where I removed the cab.
Was going to add some LED lites front & back, but, when I plugged in the soldering iron w/those heaters I popped a breaker. So, I'll have to wait for a warm day w/out heaters.
Started making my round water tower out of that coke bottle.

I guess I'm lucky to have my layout in a heated and air conditioned basement. Now I just need some way to sneak my workbench down there, since it's in the garage, and it's really hard to do anything when you can't feel your fingers. :)

Jim, For awhile I had 1 of those WM plastic folding tables in the dining room last winter & was constantly hauling stuff back & forth to the train room.
I always had plastic chips & decal paper to clean up after a modeling session. My wife told me we weren't going thru that again this winter. So, I wheeled my workbench out of the trainroom on a 2 wheel cart & put it under the house in a heated & A/C room where she use to have her sewing room.
I have to use heaters in the winter(2), but w/this years cold temps they just are not enough. I live in a stilt house & closed in a space 12 by 21 ft. where I had my 3rd layout for awhile.
Guess this summer I'm going to get an electrician to wire me up a 220v. outlet & put in a central air unit in the wall for next winter. Not going thru another winter of not being able to stay busy w/ trains. It's 20* again this morning.

yeah and WE live in FLorida! Criminy! It has been a long time since it has been this cold..in Florida!

I reme, ber in 1991 it snowed in Florida....now we got that sink hole problem going around accross the state....geesh!

OK Florida

sunshine and sandy beaches vs hurricanes, sinkholes, water shortages, HIGH electric bills due to AC......did I miss anything Larry?

How about low flying jet fighters heading for Avon Park bombing range at 6am 6 days a week.

with electric heater it is about very cold in my garage. which is still better then "f...ing freezing!!!" without. working in sweater is not fun and there is the thing of fingers freezing when touching very cold tools. brrr.

how do you get snow on your floor. i have about a dozen spaces to work in i do my machine work out in the shop in the garage. i have been working on buildings at a desk in my room (thats why it is great to be 19 i dont have a wife saying i cant do that) and i have a 10 by 20 space in the basement it does get a little chilly down there even with the house heater on but i have a little space heater for that job one with a fan in it

I live in a newer house with an extra bedroom but apparently I can't use that! I'm in the basement which is actually way better. Its never too hot or too cold and I have a 12x20 space all to myself. Something I might take advantage of this spring in terms of going beyond the 4x8. :D

When my younger son moved out the wife was an emotional wreck (don't know why it wasn't like anyone was mad or anything, just a MOM thing) So I figured I would fix his room up for her as a sewing room. (She's very good.) Then she was happy. I figured I would lay claim to my older boy's room when he moved out. Now I wonder if that's ever going to happen! Oh well, at least he helps me on the layout, sometimes.:)

This is getting to sound like a stuck record, but, it's toooo darn cold to go out in the trainroom again. Was supposed to start out at 45* & it was 30*. Sunny South Florida has switched the ends of the earth w/the north pole. Was supposed to be in the high 60's & it's in the mid 40's. Nice sunny day in the sun, cold in the wind. Supposed to be in the low 80's by Friday, then thunderstorms sat. & sun. & then cold monday again.
Never going to work on my layout again till ?? Boo-Hoo
