Hi,
I thought I found a gem at my LHS over the weekend. I've been looking for some curved rerailers. I didn't know they existed until I bought a mixed bag of old (brass) track for $5. It contained about 20 pieces of track including a couple of turnouts, a cross track, a couple of straight rerailers and a curved rerailer. Cool because I don't want the rerailer tracks to show and the way my layout is designed, the tunnels are in the corners...

Anyway, since I discovered the curved rerailer I've been looking for more. The gem... I found two at my local hobby store this past weekend. I suspected that they were steel and not N/S, but for $1.50 each I bought them anyway.

Anyone know if curved rerailers are still made? If not I'm wondering if I can pull the steel rails out and replace them with N/S or brass? They are terminal rerailers, but I don't need the terminal ports. I plan to solder feeders directly to the rails.

Thanks,
Doug

Doug,
The ones I got years ago were Shinohara(sp) & used them until I went to all NS rail. I think most of the older ones were brass. I'll look thru all my misc. track pieces & see if I still have any. You can't take the rails out because they are molded into the plastic base. You shouldn't use any steel track on your layout unless you want to deal w/major problems.

according to walthers only bachmann and lifelike still make them (or walthers still has some new) but they are both in a plastic roadbed. I use a rix rail-it and am pretty happy with it http://www.rixproducts.com/6280002.htm

That is a great product, and i have one but... it is not what the OP is looking for. The rix rail-it does not work for rolling stock already on the track but perhaps has one wheel off. A rerailer will do that.

Yeah, the one I got in the Bag-o-Track is brass. They don't need to look pretty because they will be hidden in tunnels. That's why I was thinking I could pull the steel rails and replace with brass.

Looks like I'll need to keep my eyes open for some NS or brass ones. If anyone has some old ones they would like to get rid of, please let me know.

I really like those Rix Rail-It devices. I saw a guy at a train show use one to put some N scale box cars on his tracks. He was setting the cars on the Rail-It and letting them roll down the ramp onto the tracks, so easy.

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely won't use the steel rails. My basement layout is very dry during the winter, but humidity climbs during the summer.

Doug you will most likely run into the same problem with Brass as well as Steel. I would suggest if you can, do all NS rail. It will save you alot of headaches in the track cleaning department....

You should see the ones for O gauge, really what's the point?
