Complete Idiots!

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

We still have our share of idiots over here in the U.S., even with Operation Lifesaver. It's the old "It-will-happen-to-somebody-else-not-me" attitude of denial.

That is true, there are idiots everywhere you go. Did I see that right? The person in the third "incident" lost his shoe when he picked up the pace a bit? Some people are just beyond stupid.

Yep, that kid lost his shoe. There's a thing with young thugs now where having untied shoes is cool. Made it a lot easier for old guys like me to chase them down as they were tripping on their shoes. :)

I don't know what the police procedures are in the UK but, if we had identified four grade crossings where people routinely do what I saw in those videos, we'd have a concentrated campaign with 7 or 8 units at each crossing for a week and write citations for every violation. In California, the fine for driving around a lowering gate is $459 and goes up to almost $1000 for driving around a gate that's already lowered. Unfortunatley, Network Rail can talk all they want about the danger of death from these kinds of stunts and it won't make any difference, since the people who do these thing are drunk, high, insane, or believe they are immortal. A hefty fine and losing a day of work to go to court is a much better negative reinforcer.

It's too bad that people do this to themselves:eek::eek::confused:---death wish? Who knows---:(

Even worse, it what these idiots do to the train crews that hit them. I was formerly a conductor on a local dinner train. The ONE time I took the kids on the Christmas tree train to get our tree the train clipped a kid crossing the tracks in the woods on an ATV. As soon as the train went into emergency I followed the on-duty conductor to the head end. The kids was bruised, but ok, the ATV needed a little repair, but the engineer was somewhere between livid and hysterical. The brakeman wasn't much better, and it took us about as long to calm them down as it took for the State police to arrive. Several of my co-workers on that line were involved in some hard vehicular crashes with injuries to the occupants of the cars. That takes a long time to get over.

Hefty fine--compacting of vehicle(if veh is involved)--and a mandatory retaking of the license---on top of some therapy that might give the little one some common sense?

Stupid is as stupid does.

This video reminds me of a time as a kid watching a UP train from an overpass. Several punks approached the track as the train approached and jumped across. One daredevil (idiot) intentionally waited until just the last second and then jumped across. He couldn't have been but a few feet from the front of the moving locomotive. It was so close that I remember it 35 years later like it was yesterday.

Some people are just into stupid in a big way. Its a fact of life.

They both work fine for me, DaWolf, there must be a problem at your end.

I wonder why they don't start mounting video cameras at crossings like the red light cameras at intersections? There sure would be a lot of violations and some money to be made.
