How do you guys color those sketches from railfan.net? I want to paint/color an SD40-2 and add lettering, #'s, and maybe a design to seperate 2 colors. How do you guys do it?

I'll have to try again. Everytime I tried to fill in a color it would either color an entire section or just completely change colors. It was very weird.

I've used MS Paint to do it, but it is very slow and you can't do much as far as letters, numbers or heralds.

I've started using Corel Photo Paint to do them now. The trick is to set the fill tolerance to zero, so there is no overflow of colour. The colour replace tool is also very useful.

I jsut use MS paint. Its long and tedious, but I think it works well i nthe end:

The fun thing is taking a unit to the Chop-shop. Here's an "E-90PAC"

It take time and patience. Ctrl+ Z (undo) is your best friend, as is zoom.

Well, I've done a few. I never finished the WGN SW-1...And this thread reminds me to re-do the lettering on the 604. I used Jasc for that lettering, and it turned out like crap. Now that PS6.0 is back on the laptop, I can get that finished.

The WGN 423 is probably the one I am the most proud of. It was my first, and shows the evolution of C&NW 423 as built, rebuilt, sold, and sent to tourist work on the Wisconsin Great Northern in Spooner, WI.

You can also copy and paste logo image files (bmp, gif) into your image with MS Paint. Here for example is an image of my Minnesota International Rwy Bi-Centennial unit.

Man, you guys have produced some nice stuff. I wish I had that kind of patience and talent.

When I first started modeling I have very little patience. Granted I was only 10 at the time, but still... I found out quickly that to see a model come from a bunch of parts to somethign I could be proud of I'd need to work on my temper. I made avery hard effort over the years and it has paid off. I'm not perfect, but at least I've found ways to channel my frustrations. infact sometimes I welcome the frustration of painting (on the comp or in the shop) to relieve the stress of real-world problems...

as far as talent.. I had zippo when I started. work on your patience and before you know it you might have a pit of patience and some talent to boot!
