I recently did a little horse trading with a fellow modeller and ended up with an Athearn CNR FP-7 on a Bachman Spectrum chassis (It had a DCC chip installed)
CN never had FP-7's and the athearn model is about 2 scale feet short. I decided to make it as close to a CNR FP-9 without spending much money on it but try to make the paint scheme a bit more prototypical
Amoungst my body modifiactions were:
1) Fill the lower headlight (CN never had them)
2) Replace and fill the two horns
3) cut off the rear roof overhang (CN's engines were flat at the rear)
4) Add grab irons were appropriate.
5) Add winter hatch.
I used Styrene tubing and squardon white putty to fill the horn hole and headlight. I didn't want to try to repaint the green cheveron on the front so I carefully masked that off and sanded around them. While I was at it I sanded the mold parting lines odd the top of the nose and roof.
After that I re-masked the cheveron on the nose and anything else that wasn't going to be yellow
I airbrushed Floquil CN Yellow onto the nose and pulled the tape back
The side decals aren't quite right for me. The engine #6500 is supposed to be at the rear of the engine so I tried to remove the number but ended up going through the paint as well. When that happened I sanded off all the printing on the side
and I repainted the black on the sides as well as repaint the roof, rear, side skirts and pilot in black
Here it is fresh out of the paint shop (windows still masked) waiting for decals. CN SIG made a set on decals for the sides and I have a couple nose decals spare. Beside it is it's twin, also going through the same repaint.
