Could someone please inform me on when CN came out with sargent stripes on their S-3s and RS18s? What would be appropriate for modelling 1974?

The CN Loco and stripes were adopted in 1961

RS 18: The Zebra (or Sergent) stripes do overlap in the two distinct paint scheme throughout their whole career. The stripes were used since 1961. For the RS-18 it might have been later.

Only the Cab units were done in 1961. Hood units were'nt done until 1973, (cab units were changed to 45 deg style in 1974) starting with M420 2500 and GP38-2W 5560. The cab units had a more laid back stripe that leaned backwards on both sides, so if A units were coupled back-to-back the stripes leaned different ways. The hood units had a 45 deg stripe that leaned to the left on both sides so that units coupled together had a homogenous look.

The switchers had a different scheme, none having zebra stripes on the longhood, SW1200rs, SW900s, S13s, S10s etc had an all orange cab and yellow sill stripe. I'm not aware that any S3s made it to the new scheme, seeing as most were scrapped by 1969.

Thank you.
I'm still searching for a Proto RS18. Hard to find.

You should kitbash an RS18 using Atlas RS11/RS32 parts...the Proto RS18 has serious dimensional errors, and are terrible runners in consist.

I have white metal rad and intercooler grilles that replace the ALCo parts on the Atlas RS11...lmk if you need a set...

That would be a good project, but I've yet been able to locate one.
Thanks for the info!

The original scheme when CN introduced the new logo in 1961 was all black with red ends, white side sill and the logo on the long hood. The 45deg stripes didn't start until the mid 1970s, so it's far more likely to have an RS10 or RS18 in the older paint scheme at that point, because that scheme would be very new at your time frame. The majority of CN engines at that point would be in the black scheme.

With the exception of the F unit (and MLWFPA2/4) on passenger equipment which were painted with stripes from the get go

Hi Iomalley,

I got a C424 in the noodle scheme and I like it so much that I'm thinking of getting another in the stripe scheme. Do you know if CN C424 3216 would have the stripes in 1974?
Here's some shots of the model I'm currently working on and a shot of the model I'm hoping is prototypical for the era I model.

I have a video somewhere of three CNR GP40's (?) crossing the Winnipeg floodway bridge all wearing different paint schemes.
I'll have to see if I can find it and figure out the date.
