Can anyone recommend a good website that will lay out the chronological history of deisel engines? Preferably with pictures.

Thanks!

Wikipedia is good for a few things and this is one of them. Look for EMD, American Locomotive Works (ALCO), and GE. You'll have to do some work, but you'll get the info you need.

Try these 2 books as a start.

The Contemporary Diesel Spotter's Guide

Field Guide to Modern Diesel Locomotives

All of those are awesome and in their own way, exactly what I was looking for! I cannot thank you all enough! Wheeler 1963, I will definately look for those books also, I would love to have a good train book in my car to read during lunch! Awesome and again, thanks to all of you!

The Diesel Spotters' Guide (the original version printed in 1967; covers up to mid 60s) will give you the very earliest info. Mine is very yellowed and many pages have come loose. It is out of print and can be difficult to find in good condition but it is a great resource.

After that came The 2nd Diesel Spotters' Guide which picked up where the original left off.

Contemporary Spotters' Guide picks up engines after 1972.
