Help
I live in an area that is 100 miles to the nearest Walmart and 3 1/2 hours to any freeway so to say we live in a secluded area is putting it mildly. I need to find a paint for brick. Both antique and new. Sure there are the internet stores but the color charts just don't often match what you get. So if anyone has a tried and true colors for such I would appreciate the info. I can get all the colors for any tractor made in gloss but then it just sort of fades to black and white. I would prefer a spray on for basic color and then brush for detail.
thanks
Mike

Mike, I'm assuming you have paint store there somewhere. If so, Krylon red primer is very close match to most brick colors. Flat red would also work for darker brick. I'm not suree what you mean by antique but the red primer, painted selectively with buff and white gives a pretty good illusion of used brick.

Rust-oleum

Rust-oleum also makes several different oxide red primers too. I've used these along with Krylon primer for a little variety then chalk weathered them to more exactly get the shade iI want. Rust-oleum also has a sand colored fine texture paint that is a reasonable approximation for some varieties of yellow brick as well as for aged concrete.:o

Hey, thanks guys. But you would be surprised what we don't have hear. I went to every store in town this morning looking at every red they all had and it was fire engine red or Ford tractor red and that's it. They are quick to say they can order what ever I want and then wait and see if it ever comes in or buy it even though it's the wrong shade because you ordered it. However, what we do have is solitude. When it snows and you go out and feed the horses and cattle and it's so quiet and beautiful. I went out to the train/tack building this morning around 4:30 and got ran off do to the skunk in the area so that took care of the train work out there for the day. With the color choices you all gave me I'll order those myself and I'll have them next week.
thanks
Mike

An option:

I spray grey primer (Rustoleum or Krylon) on my red brick surfaces to simulate the mortar. I then get Floquil Special Oxide Red, Boxcar Red, and another shade, and dry brush the brick color on. It is time consuming and tedious, but I like the results.

If you have a Walmart, they have Apple Barrel Acrylics in the craft department, and usually in lots of different shades of red and brown.

I've had good success with spraying a flat primer coat on any building I want to finish. I usually use a light gray or oxide red, depending on the application. Brush paints flow on and cover better. Dry brushing for weathering is easier.

A lot of older brick buildings have been painted one or more times. Very few mortar lines will show and sometimes the walls will be different colors.

brick red

thanks Trey
yes when I get to go to Walmart I have several of the apple barrel colors but nothing in the reds. It seams that my wood working business hasn't taken me to need those colors but they are on my list. I like the idea of spraying the gray first. I want to go towards the antique or used brick look on some of the buildings. Gray primer I have.
thanks
Mike

I use primer as well. I found oxide red, grey, and beige.
I also found primer white which is great for buildings, tanks, etc.
Just make sure the paint is plastic compatible by spraying a sprue first then waiting for it to dry. (learned that the hard way!)

brick red

Yes, I do have one can of plastic primer left from another job that's an off white. After Christmas one of the stores in town had the Christmas village buildings on for half price and they had a brick and cobblestone pattern that they use for roadway so I bought some of that. It covers 36" by about 6". I'll have to do a paint job on it as well. It just looks new and needs some dirt tones.
